April 2019 goals + new ninety-day goals

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-04-01

Oof, March was a rough month for me. With a bunch of (stupid, no-good) adult responsibilities to handle on the weekends, I didn't get a chance to recover much from my always-hectic workweeks.

I don't think it affected my productivity this month, but let's find out...exclamation point? Sure, why not? I'm so tired that I don't care. Let's find out!

As usual, I'll update the progress on March's goals, then set new goals for April.

Oh! And since the first quarter is done, that means it's also time for new ninety-day goals for April through June. So, this might be a long one, folks.

March 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBA): Finish addressing comments from beta readers. Start in on the final editing pass. Stretch goal: Finish the final editing pass.
    • Result: Success! Yay! I mean, I started in on that final editing pass last week, aka the last week of March, lol. But that counts! The final editing pass isn't done or anywhere near done, so no stretch goal achieved.
  2. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): On hold.
    • Result: Success! I'm so awesome at leaving things on hold. The best at it.
  3. Season two of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Release the rest of Chapter 6 to The Troupe, including remaining copyediting and final editing passes. Line edit, copyedit, and do the final editing pass on Chapter 7, so it's ready to go in early April. Stretch goal: Start in on the line editing of Chapter 8.
    • Result: Success! Chapter 7 will be released in two installments to The Troupe in April, followed by the first half of Chapter 8 on April 30th. And I've even started in on the line editing for Chapter 8! I mean, barely, but it counts. Stretch goal achieved!
  4. Close out the launch of A Brush with Betrayal. Start in on launch preparation for Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series.
    • Result: Fail. But I'm so close! I've got about 95% of the things done to wrap up the launch of A Brush with Betrayal. And the main reason I fell behind this month (and maybe why I procrastinated on doing this earlier) was because I took (slash am taking) the opportunity to update things not just for A Brush with Betrayal but for all my books. As you can imagine, that takes extra time. The good news is that I did start on the launch preparation for Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series (ssssh, don't tell).
  5. Continue work with Amazon ads.
    • Result: Success! I even nailed down some attainable (I hope) goals. Right now, I'm working toward getting 20k daily impressions at 35c bids (per click) or lower. As of right now, I've raised my daily impressions from about 300 to 1500 while keeping the average cost per click below $0.35 (USD). I'm still far off my 20k daily impressions target, but I'll take 400% growth.
  6. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways through April and into May.
    • Result: Success (as usual for this one). My cross promotions and giveaways are scheduled through April, and I have a few scheduled for May and even farther out too.

January - March 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series: Finish final draft by March 31st, 2019 (super-stretch goal according to 2019 goals).
    • Result: Nope. Not finished by March 31st, 2019, which, granted, was a super-stretch goal according to my 2019 goals, so this isn't the worst thing by far. That said, I don't anticipate finishing this until May, though I'll discuss that more when setting my April - June 2019 goals.
  2. Book Four: Finalize outline. Stretch goal: Write rough draft.
    • Result: Success! Outline finalized for now. I have not started the rough draft.
  3. Season two of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Finish the developmental editing of the entire season. Line edit, copyedit, proofread, and publish chapters four through eight to The Troupe (my readers group). This is a super-stretch goal according to my 2019 goals.
    • Result: Again, missed out on the super-stretch goal that, for some (overly amibitious) reason, I made my regular, non-stretch goal for January through March. That said, I haven't failed to deliver an installment to The Troupe since Sam's story started back up in January, so that's a win.
  4. Analyze the results of A Brush with Betrayal's launch. Adapt both launch and promotion strategies accordingly. Begin launch prep for Book Three.
    • Result: Fail. Like I said before, some of this is due to lumping in some generic publishing chores with my post-launch tasks (along with some procrastination because I did so). But I did make a ton of progress over the last three months, and it's nearly wrapped up. I also have begun launch prep for Book Three, though only a little.
  5. Continue work with Amazon ads. Would like to have them mastered by the end of June, but that is on the faster end of expectations.
    • Result: Success! I learned that Lockscreen ads don't work for me, and I'm working on mastering the Sponsored Category ads. Next up will be keyword ads, which I already have a plan for. I'm not sure if I'll have Amazon ads "mastered" by the end of June, but we'll see.
  6. Continue scheduling cross promotions, giveaways, etc.
    • Result: Success! Scheduling cross promotions and giveaways has been about as smooth as usual.

April - June 2019 Goals, keeping in mind the overall 2019 goals

  1. Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBA): Finish the final editing pass by May 23rd, 2019 (still a bit of a stretch at almost two months before my expected deadline from the 2019 goals). Stretch goal: Finish the final editing pass by April 22nd, 2019 (stretch goal according to 2019 goals).
  2. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Write and get about 75% of the way through the first draft by June 30th, 2019.
  3. Season two of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Finish editing the rest of season two and release it to The Troupe, along with a survey to decide what happens next by June 11th, 2019. Analyze the results of the survey to determine what happens in season three.
  4. Finish closing out the launch of A Brush with Betrayal. Prepare for the launch of Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series. Launch it by the end of June(!).
  5. Continue work with Amazon ads with a goal of getting at least 20k daily impressions at a smallish bid. Have them mastered enough to move onto Bookbub ads by the end of June (bit of a stretch goal).
  6. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways as usual.

April 2019 Goals

  1. Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBA): Work on the final editing pass. Get at least halfway through addressing comments. Stretch goal: Finish addressing comments by the end of the month, preferably by April 22nd, 2019.
  2. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): On hold.
  3. Season two of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Release Chapter 7 to The Troupe. Line edit, copyedit, and do the final editing pass on Chapter 8, so it's ready to go on April 30th. Stretch goal: Start in on the line editing of Chapter 9.
  4. Close out the launch of A Brush with Betrayal. Prepare for the launch of Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series.
  5. Continue work with Amazon ads. Get up to 3000 impressions a day without going over 35c bids (side note: may not be possible right now). Generate master list of keywords to try.
  6. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways through May and into June.

And as usual, let's see what I was doing this time last year.
