July 2019 goals + new ninety-day goals

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-07-08

We did it! A Brush with Blood (The Clan-Vampire Clash: Book Three) is launched. Yay!

That means now it's time to move on. To what? Well, let's find out in the monthly goals post. And this one's a big one, since it'll have the new ninety-day goals for July through September (also known as the third quarter of the calendar year) in addition to the ones specifically for July.

As usual, I'll update the progress on June's goals, then back off to the ninety-day goals from April through June (as shown in April's goals), then set new ninety-day goals for July through September, and finally set new goals for July. Buckle in. This one's a long one.

June 2019 goal update:

  1. A Brush with Blood (The Clan-Vampire Clash: Book Three): Address any comments from The Certain Cell (my team of advance readers). At that point, it will be completely, 100% done.
    • Result: Success! Comments addressed, final draft complete. :)
  2. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): On hold due to the launch of A Brush with Blood followed by the Fourth of July holiday here in the US. Stretch goal: Start back in on it!
    • Result: Double success! I did start back in on it. If I had to guess—which is hard since this is the rough draft so I don't know exactly how long the book will end up—I'd say I'm about a quarter of the way through it.
  3. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): On hold due to the launch of A Brush with Blood followed by the Fourth of July holiday here in the US. Stretch goal: Start back in on it!
    • Result: Success, but only a regular one. I did not make it back to this book in the month of June, though I plan to shortly.
  4. Prepare for the launch of A Brush with Blood and launch it!
    • Result: Double success! A Brush with Blood was launched and with all the bells and whistles I was stressing over back in June's goals.
  5. Monitor Amazon ads. Add new ads as needed to maintain performance of about 10k impressions per day.
    • Result: Quasi-success. I'm at 7-8k impressions per day, which rounds to 10k, I guess? Also, I was doing well, but then Amazon killed a bunch of my ads. I tried to restart them but with no luck. In the meantime, I've done some research and have a strategy for moving forward (more targeted ads versus broader ads). So, we'll see how that goes.
  6. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways in June as desired. If possible, fill out July's calendar too.
    • Result: Success! I'm actually booked all the way into October, with the exception of one date for cross promotions. Giveaways are typically scheduled a month or less in advance and July's are done, so that's good too.

April - June 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBA): Finish the final editing pass by May 23rd, 2019 (still a bit of a stretch at almost two months before my expected deadline from the 2019 goals). Stretch goal: Finish the final editing pass by April 22nd, 2019 (stretch goal according to 2019 goals).
    • Result: Success! I technically finished the final editing pass on May 24th, 2019, but we're calling it good.
  2. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Write and get about 75% of the way through the first draft by June 30th, 2019.
    • Result: Fail. But I have started, and like I mentioned before, I'm guesstimating that I'm about 25% of the way through the first draft. That puts me about two weeks behind, which isn't terrible.
  3. Season two of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Finish editing the rest of season two and release it to The Troupe, along with a survey to decide what happens next by June 11th, 2019. Analyze the results of the survey to determine what happens in season three.
    • Result: Success! I have a broad idea of what happens in season three based on the reader survey, though I still have to figure out the details and then outline it.
  4. Finish closing out the launch of A Brush with Betrayal. Prepare for the launch of Book Three of The Clan-Vampire Clash series. Launch it by the end of June(!).
    • Result: Success! This one was rough (and probably at least partially why Book Four is behind), but I got it done.
  5. Continue work with Amazon ads with a goal of getting at least 20k daily impressions at a smallish bid. Have them mastered enough to move onto Bookbub ads by the end of June (bit of a stretch goal).
    • Result: Fail. My first strategy (quick, targeted ads at low bids) didn't work well enough to get many impressions. My second strategy (lockscreen ads) got me lots and lots of impressions and clicks but few sales (think there might have been a lot of accidental clicks happening when people unlocked their kindles). My third strategy (broad ads at low bids) worked for a while in terms of impressions and clicks and resulted in significantly more sales and pages read in Kindle Unlimited than the lockscreen ads did. But they died after about a month and couldn't be revived. So, now I'm working on strategy number four, targeted ads that are well researched with, you guessed it, low bids. Hopefully, this is the one that works!
  6. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways as usual.
    • Result: Success! Yup, this one's pretty easy to do, just a matter of staying on top of things.

July - September 2019 Goals, keeping in mind the overall 2019 goals

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Complete the rough draft and developmental edits. Start in on the line edits.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal, I think, though it's always hard to tell this early in the writing-editing-publishing timeline. It's possible that I meet the stretch goal, but the super-stretch goal is all but out (but again, super early in the timeline, so who knows).
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Determine what happens next in detail, outline, write the rough draft, complete the developmental edits, and begin releasing fully edited installments to the Troupe by the September 17th newsletter. Stretch goal: Begin releasing installments to the Troupe by the August 27th newsletter.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to blow past both the regular goal and the stretch goal. But I won't meet the super-stretch goal (perhaps unsurprisingly).
  3. Close out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: No date mentioned in the goals, so I guess I'm on track to meet it? Lol.
  4. Continue work with Amazon ads with a goal of getting at least 20k daily impressions at a smallish bid. Optimize the price for A Brush with Vampires. Stretch goal: Master Amazon ads and move on to either BookBub ads or Facebook ads.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal. I probably won't meet the stretch goal or the super-stretch goal, but it's always possible.
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways as usual.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal. Since this is pretty much effort-based, no stretch or super-stretch goals exist.

  3. Work on closing out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed. Stretch goal: Close out the launch completely.
  4. Start well-researched, targeted Amazon ads with a low bid. Monitor and adjust as needed.
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways into August and beyond as possible.

And as usual, let's see what I was doing this time last year.
