October 2019 goals + new ninety-day goals

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-09-30

Here we are again. Another month gone, which means it's time for the monthly goals post. This one's a biggie, since it's time for the quarterly update too.

So, sit down, grab your beverage of choice (mine's a lime La Croix), and settle in.

As usual, I'll update the progress on September's goals, then back off to the ninety-day goals from July through September (as shown in July's goals), then set new ninety-day goals for October through December, and finally set new goals for October.

September 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Finish up the developmental edits. Start in on line editing.
    • Result: Success! Developmental edits are done, and I'm about 10% of the way through the line editing. :)
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Write the rough draft and complete the developmental edits for the entire season. Fully edit the first two installments, delivering one on September 17th and the next on October 1st. Side note: The latter is almost certainly a stretch goal, but I don't want to admit it.
    • Result: Yup, that latter part was a stretch goal. But I am delivering the first installment of Sam's story, season three tomorrow (October 1st), and the second installment is ready to go too. So, I was really only two weeks off, which isn't terrible, especially with my focus on Book Four.
  3. Work on closing out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed. Stretch goal: Close out the launch completely.
    • Result: Nope. But it was on purpose—I left this one on hold so I could work on my Amazon ads (see below).
  4. Start well-researched, targeted Amazon ads with a low bid. Monitor and adjust as needed. Research potential keywords from advertising reports through August 2019 and add as appropriate.
    • Result: Quasi-success? Quasi-failure? I mean, I have started them. And I am monitoring and adjusting as needed. But I haven't finished assembling all my keyword lists yet. So far, I have four of seven lists done. So, I'm more than halfway there, although that doesn't include researching potential keywords from those advertising reports.
  5. Schedule remaining openings in October and then cross promotions and giveaways in November and beyond as possible.
    • Result: Success! Cross promotions and giveaways are booked through October. November is looking a bit on the sparse side, but that's not uncommon with the holidays coming up.

July - September 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Complete the rough draft and developmental edits. Start in on the line edits.
    • Result: Success! As mentioned above, I'm about 10% of the way through the line edits.
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Determine what happens next in detail, outline, write the rough draft, complete the developmental edits, and begin releasing fully edited installments to the Troupe by the September 17th newsletter. Stretch goal: Begin releasing installments to the Troupe by the August 27th newsletter.
    • Result: Quasi-fail. Didn't hit that September 17th date, but did hit (slash am-going-to-hit) October 1st. Given that I ended up writing both seasons 3 and 4 in one big burst, I don't think this is the worst thing.
  3. Close out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed.
    • Result: NOPE. Like I said, Amazon ads are kicking my booty, and they take priority right now.
  4. Continue work with Amazon ads with a goal of getting at least 20k daily impressions at a smallish bid. Optimize the price for A Brush with Vampires. Stretch goal: Master Amazon ads and move on to either BookBub ads or Facebook ads.
    • Result: Fail? I mean, I guess? I am working on this. It's just taking way longer than I expected-slash-hoped. Story of my life, I guess. But there is an end in sight! And I even have plans for what to do afterwards. ;)
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways as usual.
    • Result: Success! Yup, I'm pretty good at this one, lol.

October - December 2019 Goals, keeping in mind the overall 2019 goals

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Finish at least half of the line edits. Stretch goal: Finish the line edits!
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal. Possible to hit the stretch goal of delivering it to beta readers by the end of the year, though that's a mix of me pushing very hard on line edits (something that I'm not sure is sustainable long-term) and me moving up beta readers' review to happen during the copyediting phase instead of after it. The super-stretch goal is out (which was finishing the final draft by October 26th).
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Deliver a fresh installment in every newsletter (occurs twice a month).
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: Blew the regular goal out of the water and made the stretch goal with a month to spare. Did not meet the super-stretch goal, which is fine.
  3. Close out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: No date mentioned in the goals, so I guess I'm good? I do need to actually do this at some point though.
  4. Finish experimenting with Amazon ads, resulting in a plan for steady-state (at least for the time being). Stretch goal: Get started on BookBub ads.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal, for a given definition of "master" anyway. I hope to dip my toes into BookBub ads by the end of the year, but they almost certainly won't be mastered by then (the stretch goal). I would be shocked if I make it to Facebooks ads (the super-stretch goal), but I guess anything's possible?
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways as usual.
    • Comparison to 2019 overall goals: On track to meet the regular goal. Since this is pretty much effort-based, no stretch or super-stretch goals exist.

October 2019 Goals

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Work on the line edits. Get through Chapter 11. Stretch goal: Get through Chapter 16.
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Deliver Chapter 11, parts 1 and 2, to the Troupe, my readers group. Fully edit Chapter 12 and deliver it to the Troupe by the end of the month. Start editing Chapter 13.
  3. Work on closing out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed. Stretch goal: Close out the launch completely.
  4. Start remaining planned Amazon ads with well-researched keyword lists. Monitor and adjust as needed.
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways into November and beyond as possible.

And as usual, let's see what I was doing this time last year.
