September 2019 goals

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-08-26

It's the end of the month, which means it's goals time! This month, we're a little early due to the upcoming labor day holiday here in the US. Because of that, I might project what I think will get done this week here and there.

As usual, I'll update the progress on August's goals, then set new goals for September.

August 2019 goal update:

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Complete the developmental edits. Stretch goal: Start in on line editing.
    • Result: I'm almost there! I finished the two major edits (punching up the beginning so it hits the ground running and what I lovingly call "exploderating the ending", i.e. making that final climax hit even harder). Now, I'm working on making sure the rest of the book is consistent with those two big changes. I'm about halfway through that, but I think I can finish it by the end of this week (also known as the end of August). But I won't start in on the line editing this month especially with number two below.
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Write the rough draft and complete the developmental edits for the entire season. Start in on line editing the first installment (which is actually a bit of stretch goal but I don't want to admit it, lol).
    • Result: Oof. Huge fail here. I did work on the rough draft a bit, but it turned out my brain really didn't like turning away from the Book Four edits to work on Sam's story: season three. Instead of fighting it, I ended up deciding to work on Book Four exclusively (though I didn't give in until mid-month). So, Sam's story is a little on hold, though I should return to it for a full week or so at the beginning of September (or maybe near the end of August, depending on how long it takes me to wrap up the developmental edits of Book Four).
  3. Work on closing out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed. Stretch goal: Close out the launch completely.
    • Result: Another one that got left on hold due to a different action item taking longer than anticipated. But I'm trying to focus on only one thing for both the writing-side and the business-side, which means some things get put on hold for a beat.
  4. Start well-researched, targeted Amazon ads with a low bid. Monitor and adjust as needed.
    • Result: Not-quite-success. I haven't started them, but I have reviewed and analyzed almost 1200 books(!) as potential targets. This week, I hope to cut down that list, group the chosen books into a few ad categories, and then set up the ads and be off! So I might technically hit this for August.
  5. Schedule cross promotions and giveaways into September and beyond as possible.
    • Result: Success! I'm actually booked until October 15th when I start having an opening here and there (but even that newsletter and the one after it are pretty full).

September 2019 Goals

  1. Book Four of The Clan-Vampire Clash (title TBD): Finish up the developmental edits. Start in on line editing.
  2. Season three of Sam's story (Troupe-only side story): Write the rough draft and complete the developmental edits for the entire season. Fully edit the first two installments, delivering one on September 17th and the next on October 1st. Side note: The latter is almost certainly a stretch goal, but I don't want to admit it.
  3. Work on closing out the launch of A Brush with Blood, including modifying the series launch plan as needed. Stretch goal: Close out the launch completely.
  4. Start well-researched, targeted Amazon ads with a low bid. Monitor and adjust as needed. Research potential keywords from advertising reports through August 2019 and add as appropriate.
  5. Schedule remaining openings in October and then cross promotions and giveaways in November and beyond as possible.

And as usual, let's see what I was doing this time last year.
